Celebrating 50 Years!
On
October 22, 2008 DPCR (now The In Community) celebrated its 50th Anniversary, in fine style,
at the Hampton Inn Ottawa. Focusing on the theme of inclusion,
integration and independence, the dinner and silent auction attracted agency volunteers, members, clients, staff as well as local community and business leaders.
The celebration began with a silent auction and magnificent photo exhibit.
Dinner was served at 7:00 p.m. followed by the program which included
a video montage telling DPCR’s story...a trip down memory lane from
our humble beginnings as the Rehabilitation Institute of Ottawa in 1958 through to
The In Community as it is known today. Michael O’Byrne, Anchor/Producer,
CTV News @ Noon, was the superb Master of Ceremonies and speakers included Teena Tomlinson, Executive Director, The In Community, Jo-Anne Poirier, Board Member,
Champlain Local Health Integrated Network and CEO, Ottawa Community Housing Corporation, Dennis Jackson, District Vice-President,
Scotiabank and Chair, United Way/Centraide Board of Directors and Wendy
Duross, President, The In Community.

This special evening held many surprises. Community activist and former Ottawa Mayor, Jacqueline Holzman was honoured with a Community Builder Award in recognition of her countless years of service and counsel to many organizations. Jackie was a founding member and an active volunteer for the Rehabilitation Institute of Ottawa and spearheaded the development of our supportive housing program, the first of its kind in Ottawa.
Nicole Vallée, was named DPCR's Volunteer of the Year in recognition of her tireless work with our Marketing and Communications Committee. The Silent Auction, a first for DPCR, raised over $5,800 and on the night of our celebration, Scotiabank generously offered to match the proceeds up to $5,000. By all accounts our auction was a tremendous success.
