Circulation Routes
Parking spaces designated for persons with disabilities should be located on the shortest possible circulation route to an accessible entrance. The accessible route should not require people to pass behind vehicles that may be backing out and should:
- Have a clear width of at least 1500 mm (59 inches) or where adjacent to a curb ramp 920 mm (36 inches);
- Where adjacent to a vehicular route be separated from it by a curb with a curb ramp; a railing or barrier; or a detectable hazard indicator.
Signs for Designated Parking
Designated parking spaces shall be identified by a vertically mounted sign; and the International Symbol of Access painted on the pavement.
Vertical signs shall
- Be at least 300 mm (12 inches) wide by 450 mm (18 inches) high;
- Have the centre of the sign 1500 to 2500 mm (59 to 98 inches) from the ground;
- Incorporate the International Symbol of Access.
Pavement signs shall
- Be the International Symbol of Access;
- Be located in the centre of the parking space;
- Be at least 1000 mm (39 inches) in length; and
- Be in a colour strongly contrasting with the background pavement.
Parking Surfaces
Designated parking and their adjacent access aisles shall have surfaces:
- That are level, stable, firm and slip resistant;
- That have diagonal markings on the access aisles.
Parking Space Dimensions
Designated parking spaces for cars shall:
- Be at least 2400 mm wide (approx. 95 inches);
- and have an adjacent access aisle at least 1500 mm wide (approx. 59 inches).
